Fun question: What is one thing you can’t live without? Laughter.
Juliana Martínez Ph.D has a career that combines academia, civil society work, activism and consulting to advance LGBTQ+ rights in Latin America. Before joining Nebula Juliana was Associate Professor at American University (Washington, D.C), and the Research Director of Sentiido, a Colombia-based, women and queer-led, trans-inclusive feminist organization that focuses on advancing gender justice through narrative power and research. With twenty years of research and teaching experience, Juliana has explored how cultural representation impacts ethno-racial, gender, and sexual minorities, with a particular focus on Latin America.
In her role as Sentiido’s lead researcher, Juliana stewarded multiple research projects on issues related to gender and SOGIE. These projects combine qualitative and quantitative methods, country-specific and regional work, as well as virtual tools, in-person, and community-based participatory strategies.
Juliana also brings over ten years of experience working on narrative change efforts with content creators that range from video game producers to digital toy companies and the entertainment industry; as well as a decade of experience supporting multilateral development organizations in their understanding and operationalization of LGBTQ+ inclusive initiatives. Juliana is a strong advocate for transfeminist and intersectional social movements, a life-long learner who enjoys travel, and thrives in diverse, collaborative environments.
